L O C A L I N T E R E S T S THE
AREA around Mezerville is rich in wildlife. Several species of orchid
can be found in May and June; other wild flowers grow in abundance
along the roadsides throughout the summer. Hoopoes, golden orioles
and bee eaters are regular summer visitors. There are a pair of hen
harriers that frequently hunt over the fields and occasionally other
birds of prey can be seen. Canal
du Midi Only 15 minutes
away and recently featured on television by Rick Stein in his French
Odyssee. A good place to
walk or cycle along the tow paths. (we have 3 bikes that you are welcome
to borrow). There are some organized boat excursions from Castelnaudary. Lac
Ganguise where there is
sailing, windsurfing, fishing and swimming. Mirepoix
a medieval town has a
colourful Monday market as well as other events during the summer. There
are several open air cafes and restaurants. Carcassonne
is approximately 50
minutes away. Within the old walled cite there is something to interest
everyone e.g. cafes and restaurants, museums, old cobbled streets, the
cathedral, the chateau and the fortifications. During the July festival
concerts are held every night in the open air theatre and also impromptu
concerts in the main square. Cathare
Castles. There are
several of these historic monuments within easy reach. Mediterranean
coast. Several spacious
sandy
beaches just over an hour away. Toulouse
is less than an hour by
motorway for those wishing to visit a beautiful southern French city of
culture (and shopping!) Within
a 90 minute radius you can also visit the
Pyrenees, Andorra for
duty free shopping, Albi with its Toulouse Lautrec museum and
cathedral, the Tarn gorges, prehistoric caves, etc. etc. There
are some lovely and varied drives through the wine country and ‘caves’ where the different wines can be tasted and purchased.
